I finally completed the groundwork and foliage for this piece. The grass and shrubbery were painted and stained in greens. Highlights were added. The base was also painted over. This piece is near completion.
I have built up a personal collection of miniature figurines. Starting with commercially available kits, the collection was gradually built up to represent various aspects of military subjects and now, includes many other unique figures which represent cultural subjects, all sculpted from epoxy putty, plastic and metal over wire armatures. This blog will record the curation of this diverse and evolving collection.

Kato Kiyomasa 12
The jinbaori was further sculpted. I carefully added the "ears" to the shikoro made from copper sheet. A final trimming with small scissors was required to balance both sides. The battle fan was glued to the grip. Two details of tiny cords, taken from Historex spares, were added to the fan grip and to the sword grip. This completes the sculpting and the painting has begun.

ECW Drummer 3
I decided to shorten the legs below the knee by about 3 mm and also changed subtly the gait. This is to represent an older and heavy man shuffling along with his drum.
Nap Bri Inf 5
Here is the new pose with hands added. This is based on a nice illustration in the book "Bloody Albuera by Ian Fletcher.

Murat mounted 4
I decided that the Murat figure was sitting too high in the saddle. The figure was sawed off at the waist and putty was used to resculpt the waist and upper thighs.
Mendi 7
More careful painting was done to the figures, the face paint and the skirts. The ground work was stained in various shades of brown.

I shortened the legs below the knee, removed most of the putty and resculpted the legs to represent tight trousers. The shoes were carefully trimmed and spats were added.

The unusual headdresses were made and fitted to the head nets. Other foliage was made from brass sheets and plastic leaves.
Kato Kiyomasa 9
A lot of work is going into the towering headdress. I am building up the right side while filing down the left side.

Kato Kiyomasa 7
I removed the right arm and filed the joint to get it to mate better with the body. The jinbaori right shoulder was resculpted. The head was decapitated and repositioned looking ahead. A mempo face mask is sculpted.
Mendi 4
I cleaned up the figures and rolled some copper wire around both their necks. Copper wire was selected as it was malleable and would make a good representation for beads.

Heian Palace Guard 15
The foliage was highlighted with a lighter green. Following a dollop of white glue, a sprinkling of crystalline snow was made over groundwork and tree branches. The deer was fixed into place.
The scene is complete. The Heian Palace Guard has made his kill. These deer were protected by royal decree.

Heian Palace Guard 14
Finally, I added groundwork to the base and it is now awaiting the final sprinkle with snow to complete the scene.
PNG Cyclist 6
I have started to work on the detailing of the face and headdress. The pig was further sculpted and the whole piece was posed on the bicycle to check for fit. A drum is also being sculpted.
