I made the hanging drum slings from thin metal strips and added buttons and patches to the piece. The sculpting is completed and I am now starting to paint the figure fully.
I have built up a personal collection of miniature figurines. Starting with commercially available kits, the collection was gradually built up to represent various aspects of military subjects and now, includes many other unique figures which represent cultural subjects, all sculpted from epoxy putty, plastic and metal over wire armatures. This blog will record the curation of this diverse and evolving collection.

Imrie-Risley AWI Boy Drummer 2
I have started to add buttons to the cuffs. I also added the short sword under the drum. There was part painting of the coat and turnbacks.

I decided to change again the pose of the right hand. Meanwhile, I am making up the flag and staff for this figure.

Imrie-Risley AWI boy drummer
This is the iconic figure from the Imrie-Risley range. I had made it many years ago, with some conversion mainly to the head, and adding a few spare accessories. The figure was found broken and I have decided to completely redo the piece.
It was soaked in dettol to remove all the paint. Some previous putty was also scrapped off.
I misplaced the left arm but I had decided to replace it anyway. I decided to change the pose a little. The right hand was drilled through and a wire inserted to change the pose. The right hand pose was also changed. The lug for the drum was too low and was removed. A new hole was drilled further up the body, wire inserted and the drum was fixed in this position. Wire was used to create a pose for the left arm.
The left arm was sculpted and collars were added. Some putty was added to bulk up the thighs.
The right arm was filed down to create new folds and to match the new pose. The left hand was added, gripping the drum ropes. Hair and ribbons were sculpted and the drum sling and canteen were also added at this stage.
I think that the pose really looks quite good with these minor improvements.

The pose of the right hand was changed again. The head was enlarged slightly with putty. The top of the head was snipped off to accomodate a hat. A hat brim was fashioned from putty. When almost hardened, the brim was finally shaped and pressed onto the head. A crown was pressed on top and shaped. A feather was sculpted.
The figure was spray coated in white to reveal defects. The right hand was extended by about 1 mm.

Tradition Henry VIII 8
Following the first round of painting, I still saw defects which had to be rectified with putty.
The tunic was repainted with a mix of iridiscent white and olive green.

ECW Standard Bearer
I had actually started this figure in July 2013. I found all the pieces and tried it with the different boots. I eventually created a pose which I think will work. A head was selected but it is being enlarged slightly to accommodate this piece. The bow and sash ends are being sculpted.
Sarum 71st Highland Officer
I had built and painted this figure without modification then. The figure was placed on a bracken-covered base.
I have recently decided to refurbish this piece. I prised the figure away from the base. I generally like the pose but decided to remove some of the engraved details especially on the doublets which looked crude. The limbs are rather thin and the left leg is shorter than the right leg. When seen from the side, the figure is flattened.

Putty was added to build up the back and the right thigh.
The right hand has also been readjusted. The left leg was cut off and re-pinned. Putty was added to lengthen it.
The plaid is being resculpted to accommodate the enlarged torso.

I had assembled and painted this figure straight from the kit then.
More recently, I've decided to refurbish it slightly by repainting the face and tightening some details.

Tradition Bonnie Prince Charles
I had converted this piece many years ago from a Tradition figure which was wearing trews. The head was turned to the left and the right hand was completely resculpted. A kilt and sporran was added from Airfix parts and there was an attempt to sculpt the great kilt plaid at the shoulder.
The figure looks in need of a refurbishment.

WWII Japanese Cyclist 7
I added shadows of burnt umber and gave the whole piece a wash of burnt umber. The Japanese headband was painted and the base was titled and signed off. Finished!
Celtic Warrior 14
I repainted the fringe, and highlighted it to represent the effects of coating the hair with lime.
The rest of the body was fully painted in oils too. The next step is to add the body markings with blue paint.
