One of my favourite pieces, I've further updated this piece with a shiny name plate and also finalised the painting on the back of the wood display.
I have built up a personal collection of miniature figurines. Starting with commercially available kits, the collection was gradually built up to represent various aspects of military subjects and now, includes many other unique figures which represent cultural subjects, all sculpted from epoxy putty, plastic and metal over wire armatures. This blog will record the curation of this diverse and evolving collection.

Napoleonic Drum Major 3
Following the undercoat, the Hungarian knots were further scrapped off as they were the wrong pattern. I intend to overpaint the correct pattern onto the hips.
The figure was further undercoated with yellow trim. The plume was painted.
The turnback heart devices were wrong. These were scrapped off and substituted with Historex flaming grenade devices
So far, this is the stage of oil painting, including basic highlights and shading. Yellow was used to highlight the tunic and trousers. I've used purple as a unifying shade colour for the figure. The outlines of the Hungarian knots can be seen on the hips.

WWI British Postman 9
Finally added the round finial to the top of the post. This was pinned with an inserted wire for strength. Similarly, the iron grillewoork was also pinned to the post with thin wire.
Japanese Trilogy
These are the three Samurai-themed figures recently refurbished to which I have now added name plates to the bases.

FFL Kettledrummer 3
Back to the figure. I removed the hands and removed the insignia plate and cross belts which were made of plastic tape. I intend to replace these with soft metal strips.
As can be seen, the upper torso of the figure is off-set to the right. The upper torso was sawn off and re-pinned to sit correctly on the lower body.
Upon rechecking my references, it would appear that the saddlecloth was similar to other kettledrummer's saddlecloth. I filed down the back of the saddlecloth and made the back extension from copper sheet. This was epoxied onto the horse.
The fringes on the forehead and breast band was resculpted. The gaps in between the upper torso and legs were filled in. Thin metal strips were glued over the fringes.
Aves putty was used to create a smooth surface on the gaps between the legs and the saddlecloth and also to create the back of the saddle.

FFL Kettledrummer 2
Following a close examination of the figure, I decided that I had to correct some anatomical features. There were other uniform details which should also be rectified. Hence it would appear that I have to do a complete makeover on this piece.
I removed the kettledrums to get at the legs. The boots were removed and the trousers were carved back to the correct proportions.
The fetlocks were added with a pyrogravure.
The boots were refitted with new stirrups and reattached in the correct position, checking that both were in correct alignment. One boot was refitted with a new spur made from thin wire.
The trousers were resculpted with jodhpurs. The front of the saddlecloth was also alignment and resculpted. The forelock on the horse was removed and the decorative fringe on the forehead and breastband was removed.

Napoleonic Drum Major 2
I've started to paint this figure as a Drum Major of the 9th Ligne Regt. The decorations on the hips were scrapped off.
Napoleonic Jingling Johnny
Here is another Russian casting. Measuring a hefty 60mm to the top of the head, the fiugre has been primed and undercoated.

French Foreign Legion Kettledrummer
I had first made this figure many years ago. This was a conversion featuring a Verlinden French officer mounted onto a Historex horse with kettledrums. Over the years, the matt varnish as yellowed and I've decided to refurbish this piece.
I think that the proportions are pretty good. The base is too large and plain for the mounted figure. The bits are not correctly attached and the right leg is slightly longer than the left leg. The throat plume could be spruced up and generally, the trousers could be improved. I could add minor details such as the fetlocks and so on as I go along.

Napoleonic Drum Major
I got this casting from Russia. It looks like a good pose but the figure height is at least 60mm. The details are not specific to any regiment but suggest several different Drum Major uniforms. I have eventually settled on the uniform of the 9th Ligne Regiment, a nice bright red green uniform.
I snipped off the figure base and mounted the figure onto a wooden base made from a modified candlestick holder, stained dark brown and gloss varnished.

Napoleonic Marines of the Guard Drummer
This figure was made many years ago, representing an Imperial Marine drummer in campaign dress. I have just touched up the drumskin with beat marks.
Louis XIV Drummer 20 FINISHED
I last worked on this in Oct 2014. I've just touched up the drumskin with beat marks and added a nice brass nameplate.
