Toy Soldier Sculpt

Probably around this time, I decided that I could sculpt a complete figure, except for the face. So using an Airfix head, I sculpted a marching bandsman based largely on a dismounted US cavalry figure. The helmet is a standard pickelhaube. Arms were fashioned around specific musical instruments.

A mould was made of the marching figure and about 15 castings were made. About 10 of them were made up as a prototype set, using some cast arms and other plastic arms and instruments. A tuba with right arm was also made to obtain several castings. This prototype set was actually sold off to a discerning collector who appreciated a completely original set.

Buoyed by this success, a couple of other prototype marching bandsmen representing the 5th lancers and Royal Marines were made up from spare castings. All heads were also made into moulds. However, I never got past the single figure prototype for these proposed band sets as my interest was wandering towards another theme.
